At the northern end of Mehringplatz, two large murals are facing one another on the opposite facades of the concentric housing estate. On the right-hand side is “Make Art not War” by the American Street Art artist Shepard Fairey.

The large mural was commissioned by Urban Nation in 2014 as part of the One Wall project. The work is symmetrically structured and is kept in the colours red and black. On the left and right, red areas each with a vertical brush form a frame. In the middle is a black surface framed by white Art Nouveau elements, in the middle of which is a red rose placed in chains. Above it the slogan “Make Art Not War” is placed – alluding to the “Make Love Not War” slogan, coined by the hippie movement in their protest against the Vietnam War. The handcuffed rose is symbolising that it is possible to rise above social constraints. The rose is also a symbol of love, alluding to the original slogan “Make Love Not War”.

In Berlin are several works by Shepard Fairey, for instance No Future

Rechterhand sehen wir „Make Art not War“, entworfen vom amerikanischen Street-Art-Künstler Shepard Fairey.

Darüber steht der Spruch “Make Art Not War.”
