The “world tree” is the bedrock among Berlin’s murals. The artist Ben Wagin painted it in 1975 on a fire wall near the S-Bahn station Tiergarten. Here, at Siegmunds-Hof 21, Wagin in 1962 had opened the Galerie S, exhibiting the works by Berlin artists, but quickly gaining worldwide fame. Trees have a special meaning for Wagin. In October 1976 he founded the Baumpatenverein e. V. (tree sponsorship association), aiming to promote the quality of life in the city. He planted trees in numerous places in Berlin: for example at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche, on the former death strip separating East and West Berlin, and in front of Brecht’s famour theatre, the Berliner Ensemble.

In 2018 the World Tree moved from Tiergarten to Moabit. The original tree disappeared due to the construction of a new office building. But during the Berlin Mural Festival in May 2018 it was re-painted in only five days by street art artists of the “Berlin Art Bang” association – including the artists Size Two, Kobe Eins, Ria Wank, Keral, Quintessenz, Icke_art, TXNK, YAT, dyneart and Die Dixons – on the fire wall of the building Lehrter Straße 27-30 in the immediate vicinity of the Klara-Franke playground. Now the thick old tree with its toothed smile stretches its bare branches again in all directions; next to it the well-known collection of technical objects. And the tree-loaded ship at the top of the wall is now also sailing again over the water.
