One of the most famous murals in Berlin is rising-up just around the corner from Heinrichplatz on a 22 × 14 meter large surface of a house wall: the Spaceman of Kreuzberg.

It was created in 2007 by Victor Ash, a pioneer of the French graffiti and street art scene. Ash was since the early 1980s a member of the legendary Parisian graffiti crew BBC and worked together with Bando, Mode2 and JonOne, among others, who themselves were great pioneers of street art in Europe. He is famous for his black and white murals in which he visualizes contemporary historical themes.

Astonaut-Cosmonaut shows a hovering spaceman during a space walk. Ash used the spaceman as symbol of the Cold War. This is also reflected in the title “Astronaut-Cosmonaut”. The “race into space” was realized by astronauts on the American side and by cosmonauts on the Soviet side. The space traveller of Kreuzberg thus also symbolizes the forced division of Berlin after the Second World War by the Soviet Union and the Allies.

Next Stop: Make Art Not War
