BERLIN STREET ART

Street art is as old as the world itself. In contrast to many other art works, street art is not necessarily commissioned, while or because of often being highly political. At the same time, few other art forms have the potential to reach so many people in an analogous manner and to inspire political action and resistance.

In this manner. the city walls become canvases for political messages. The walls of Berlin have their own unique stories to tell, of two world wars, the blockade and airlift, and the division of Germany and the country’s reunification.

Berlin – as a divided city and symbol of the Cold War – has inspired many street art artists to visualize the historical fate of the city. As a result, many political images are appearing on Berlin’s variety of empty walls that are partly a relict from the damage which the city suffered during the Second World War.
